Study this material, and as appropriate, discuss it with the sisters you visit. Use the questions to help you strengthen your sisters and to make Relief Society an active part of your own life.

Over the centuries many people have died without knowledge of the gospel. Some of those people are your near and distant relatives. They are waiting for you to do the necessary research to link your families together and perform saving ordinances on their behalf.

Most of the temples of the world are not busy enough. The Lord has promised that your hearts would be turned to the fathers so that the earth would not be utterly wasted at His coming (see D&C 2:2–3).

There are personal blessings you receive as a result of participation in temple and family history work. One of these is the joy that you feel as you serve your ancestors. Another is that you are able to qualify for a temple recommend, which signifies your worthiness before the Lord. Those who are not worthy today of the privilege of having a recommend should be working with a bishop or branch president to qualify as soon as possible. Please don’t be without this vital qualification. I testify that the Atonement is real and that sins can be forgiven upon proper repentance.

As we participate in temple and family history work, we are certain to have the Spirit to comfort us in our challenges and to guide us in important decisions. Temple and family history work is part of our work of providing relief, or service, to our own ancestors.
Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.

From the Scriptures
Malachi 4:5–6; 1 Corinthians 15:29; 1 Peter 3:18–19; D&C 110:13–16; 128:24

From Our History
“The Prophet Joseph Smith said, ‘The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead’ (History of the Church, 6:313). From the beginning, Relief Society sisters have supported this great work. In Nauvoo in 1842, Sarah M. Kimball’s desire to help the temple construction workers prompted a group of sisters to organize themselves so that they could serve more effectively. As they began to meet, the Prophet … organized the first Relief Society after the pattern of the priesthood. From that time on, the Relief Society sisters helped further the work on the Nauvoo Temple. …

“In 1855, eight years after the Saints first arrived in Utah, the Endowment House was established. Eliza R. Snow, who had been one of the original members of the first Relief Society and had preserved the records of that organization, was called by President Brigham Young in 1866 to be the general Relief Society president. She and other sisters were faithful workers in the Endowment House. Then, as the St. George, Logan, and Manti Temples were completed, these sisters traveled to each temple so they could do work for the dead there.” – Mary Ellen Smoot, “Family History: A Work of Love,” Ensign, Mar. 1999, 15.

What Can I Do?
1. How can I help my sisters search out their ancestors and perform temple ordinances for them? Consider the circumstances of each sister as you ponder how to meet her needs. You might consider that family history work can often strengthen new, returning, and less-active members.
2. When has temple and family history work comforted me in my challenges or guided me in important decisions?

As many of you may have noticed, this November 2010 General Conference issue of the Ensign/Liahona has some great helps and teaching tools besides the printed text of all the messages shared. Here’s an overview with the files which you can print at home for the sisters you Visit Teach in case you feel they need them or if they don’t even have a copy of the Ensign or Liahona magazines.

General Authorities Chart: This contained a two-page chart showing the General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (most of them anyways, I don’t think they would ever be able to fit all of them on 2 sheets of paper.) Here it is for you to download either all on 1 page PDF printed 8.5×14 or a 2 page PDF document which you can print on 2 sheets of 8.5×11 letter size paper.

Conference Story Index: Then we were given a list of Stories. A list of selected stories or experiences from general conference addresses for use in personal study, family home evening, and other teaching. What a great way to quickly find the stories you remember, in order to share them with the sisters you Visit Teach. My hubby loves stories and that’s what helps him remember the messages of each talk, so he was really excited to find this. The number refers to the first page of the talk in the Ensign magazine. Here’s the JPG you can download and then print at home.

RS Meeting Highlights & Story Index: Lastly here is a document which I created to help me with my Relief Society Newsletter this month. This file includes “Highlights” from our General Relief Society Meeting as well as the Story Index mentioned above. I think having this will help us to see what our Relief Society leaders are wanting us to focus on. I also included the Story Index because I think that is such a nifty little chart and has already helped me to identify a talk I wanted to share simply by looking up the story. Just download the PDF and print it! Remember, you can share any message you feel would help your sisters this month, so if you don’t want to share any messages from the General Relief Society Meeting, you don’t have to use this document, there are many options.

November 2010 – Pre-made & Handmade Visiting Teaching & Home Teaching Gifts & Kits
These General Conference themed premade gifts are fantastic because they can be used for Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching this month. Since our hubbies are always helping us out, why not help them. I know my hubby is always relying on the gifts and goodies I have ready for him to take with him when he goes Home Teaching. The sisters who designed these gifts and kits chose different messages to focus their kits on, so pick the one you feel will help them the most.

I chose to create an enhancer for this message from the General Relief Society Meeting, because, I personally needed to hear President Monson’s message titled Charity Never Faileth. I never thought of myself as being judgmental, but after listening to him and re-reading his message, I believe I have some work to do. My Favorite part, of course, is this one:

I chose to create an enhancer for this message from the General Relief Society Meeting, because, I personally needed to hear President Monson’s message titled Charity Never Faileth. I never thought of myself as being judgmental, but after listening to him and re-reading his message, I believe I have some work to do. My Favorite part, of course, is this one:

““Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” Or, to paraphrase, why beholdest thou what you think is dirty laundry at your neighbor’s house but considerest not the soiled window in your own house?”

You can now see why I chose to use a window cleaner (which is a digital graphic from LetteringDelights.com which I altered). This will help remind me that I’m not looking through a perfect set of eyes, and that I should focus more on improving myself instead of trying to judge others. It also reminds me to stop talking and just do it, just take time to clean my own windows instead of staring out of them. [Which BTW I should anyways, because my windows are dirty.] I love the sweet husband in the story, who took initiative and cleaned the window for his dear wife. I know my hubby would have cleaned our windows too. I’m grateful to be married to a great Priesthood holder, who creatively helps me to become a better person, instead of judging me like I have just judged someone else.

It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to re-read, listen or watch General Conference again, to keep us focused. This is the message I needed to hear, but my sisters may need a different one. I may end up sharing a different message, but of course all messages are to help us in our lives, especially those who come from the prophet of God.

President Monson’s whole story (but not the entire talk) is quoted in this Window Cleaner Card printable PDF. It’s double-sided, one side in color and one in black and white. Should line up really well when printed double-sided.

What a great Conference weekend! I love being able to spend time with family and listen to the prophet, his counselors, the apostles and other leaders of The Church. They are amazing examples of love, service and dedication; all with the same purpose. It’s great to feel the spirit testify of the truths which they so boldly and faithfully share with us.

As you already know for this month we get a new booklet on Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There were so many great quotes and great messages regarding the Temple (12 different headings with info to be exact) I just couldn’t decide. Since there were 2 specific addresses (by Elder Claudio R. M. Costa & Elder Kevin R. Duncan) in General Conference who mentioned the importance of listening to our “living” prophet, I made sure to include a quote by President Thomas S. Monson from “Blessings of the Temple.”

Quote: “The temple provides purpose for our lives. It brings peace to our souls.”

Text on the card: “Fall in love with… Temple Service” – Since it’s FALL, I used the super darling LetteringDelight’s “Delight-Fall” collection: digital paper and digital graphic set.

I encourage you to order additional copies (item number 09339) so you can use it to teach your family, or give it to the sisters you Visit Teach in case they didn’t get one and share it with friends who would like to learn more about these sacred buildings.
Instructions:

Click on image & download it. (it’s a jpg)

Print it 4×6 (you might need to adjust your printer settings because if printed at 100% it might be too big), in color on thick cardstock.

Recommended: take/upload the image (jpg file) to your local print shop and have them print it 4×6 on regular photo paper like you would regular pictures. Cosco, Walmart, Target… whatever you want!

Attach it to a copy of this new Temple Booklet, insert it into a 4×6 frame, or attach it to a pack of fall leaves. I know you’re all more creative so just whatever you think of would be great or just mail it as-is.

October 2010 – Pre-made & Handmade Visiting Teaching Gifts & Kits w/ a Temple Theme!

Last month, I ordered a couple of these amazing premade kits, and it saved me a lot of time and was soooo darling and thoughtful. The sisters obviously loved them! You just have to see these kits in person, because the images don’t do them any justice.

Packer President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
No work is more of a protection to this Church than temple work and the family history research that supports it. No work is more spiritually refining. No work we do gives us more power. No work requires a higher standard of righteousness. Our labors in the temple cover us with a shield and a protection, both individually and as a people.

As you can see this month is Temple Month!! I’ve picked out all of the fun printables from the past, that focus on Temples and put them on the RIGHT sidebar so you could pick one to use or get an idea from one. I’ll be designing one for this month during conference.:)

We get to learn more about the Temple, the history about Temples, learn why we have Temples, how we can stay motivated by the Temple, about Temple service, blessings that come from going to the Temple, how youth can also participate in Temple ordinances and more!

Our family is blessed to live in a place where a Temple is literally less than 15 minutes away. I have experienced attending the Temple 6 times in less than 3 weeks and then not attending the Temple in 1 week. Let me tell you, you can feel the difference!!! It’s amazing how much the Spirit can help guide you when you’re always attending the Temple and making time to attend the Temple.

My husband and I have gone from never uttering the word “Temple” because we were afraid that Satan would up his ammo and do everything to keep us from going to the Temple. For example; we would have to send an email whenever we wanted to go and then just plan on going, or we’d have to go at the spur of the moment so he didn’t have time to keep us from going. Sad, I know! But we have learned that it’s not something we need to keep a secret, we must and we now do talk openly about it, and now we plan to go regularly and have so many reminders that it’s almost impossible to keep us from going to the Temple. I love the Temple, the power and peace it brings to me and my family when we make it a part of our lives. My husband and I go to the Temple every other week, but we trade off weeks so that at least 1 person in our family is going to the Temple each week so we can keep that power, peace and spirit in our home and in our hearts as much as possible. If we move away from Temples, I never want to look back and think, I should have gone to the Temple more when we lived so close. My wise Bishop also suggested that we invite someone to go with us to the Temple. Great idea! I am going to strive to invite as many people as I can.

I know some of you can’t go to the Temple as often and probably have to save a lot before you can even afford to go to the nearest Temple, but keeping a current Temple recommend is just as important. That means that at anytime, you are ready to enter The House of The Lord. You’re ready to do the ordinances you promised to do and those you were meant to do. There are so many Temples being built, soon they will be close to everyone.

Each article in this month’s Ensign/Liahona is available to read, download as a PDF or to listen to. What a great opportunity this is for us to fall in love with the Temple all over again. If we can’t go on 10/10/10 this year (because it’s a Sunday and Temples are closed on Sundays), maybe we can strive to go to the Temple 10 times as a family this month. I pray I will!

I love the reminders we get to not only teach and help, our children and those children we come in close contact with, but to “nurture” them. As you all know this month’s message is titled “Our Responsibility to Nurture the Rising Generation.” One of the definitions for the word nurture is: “the sum of the environmental factors influencing the behavior and traits expressed by an organism.” The organism being our “Rising Generation.” We are responsible for surrounding ourselves and our “rising generation” with righteousness, the best music, the best pictures, the best books, our best language, our best behavior, best manners and our best habits. I believe it’s not just the one FHE lesson or the one family prayer or one time scripture reading, but the constant and consistent habits which we can instill in our own lives which will become the same habits our rising generation will strive to make a part of their lives, because they will know that is what has brought happiness in their parent’s, leader’s and neighbor’s lives. This will strengthen them and they will know what they need to do in the face of adversity.

I chose to edit a cute seed packed from LetteringDelights.com because I believe our generation of little one’s can be likened to seeds, rising from the ground into tall trees or beautiful flowers and in turn make the rest of the world a better place for the 2nd coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

I used the following scripture & quotes on the packet.

“The world we are in is a world of turmoil, of shifting values.” President Gordon B. Hinckley, “Stand Strong against the Wiles of the World,” Ensign, Nov. 1995.

“As parents, leaders, and Church members, we are preparing this generation for the blessings of Abraham, for the temple. We have the responsibility to be very clear on key points of doctrine found in the proclamation on the family.” Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.

With school starting, I bet most of you have a bit more time on your hands to print and cut the fun Visiting Teaching printables I provide you with, and I bet some of you are even starting to design their own fun handouts and things. Which if you do please share them with us on our facebook page. If there are the occasional sisters out there who just would rather focus their efforts on visiting teaching instead of cutting and pasting, like I do, here are some super amazing suggestions!

Alma 53:20–21; “And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted. Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.”

Alma 56:47; “Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.”

Alma 57:27; “Now this was the faith of these of whom I have spoken; they are young, and their minds are firm, and they do put their trust in God continually.”

Without nurturing, our rising generation could be in danger of becoming like the one described in Mosiah 26. Many youth didn’t believe the traditions of their fathers and became a separate people as to their faith, remaining so ever after. Our rising generation could likewise be led away if they don’t understand their part in Heavenly Father’s plan.

So what is it that will keep the rising generation safe? In the Church, we teach saving principles, and those principles are family principles, the principles that will help the rising generation to form a family, teach that family, and prepare that family for ordinances and covenants—and then the next generation will teach the next and so on.

As parents, leaders, and Church members, we are preparing this generation for the blessings of Abraham, for the temple. We have the responsibility to be very clear on key points of doctrine found in the proclamation on the family. Motherhood and fatherhood are eternal roles and responsibilities. Each of us carries the responsibility for either the male or the female half of the plan.

We can teach this doctrine in any setting. We must speak respectfully of marriage and family. And from our example, the rising generation can gain great hope and understanding—not just from the words we speak but from the way we feel and emanate the spirit of family.

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.

From Our History

Addressing the sisters at the general Relief Society meeting on September 23, 1995, President Gordon B. Hinckley said: “The world we are in is a world of turmoil, of shifting values. Shrill voices call out for one thing or another in betrayal of time-tested standards of behavior.”1 President Hinckley then went on to introduce to the sisters, the Church, and ultimately people everywhere “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”

In subsequent years this prophetic document has been translated into many languages and distributed to world leaders. It asks citizens and government leaders “to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.” 2

The proclamation has become the foundation for Latter-day Saint beliefs about the family, a statement to which we can hold fast and know that by living its precepts, we are strengthening our families and homes.

What Can I Do?
1. How can I help my sisters use “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” to nurture the rising generation? You might consider sharing a copy of the proclamation and helping your sisters identify and mark those passages that would best teach key doctrines.
2. How can I nurture the rising generation? You might consider reaching out to members of your ward, branch, family, or community who could benefit from your attention and love.

From the Scriptures:

Isaiah 2:2–3; “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

D&C 109:22–23; “And we ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them; And from this place they may bear exceedingly great and glorious tidings, in truth, unto the ends of the earth, that they may know that this is thy work, and that thou hast put forth thy hand, to fulfill that which thou hast spoken by the mouths of the prophets, concerning the last days.”

D&C 110:8–10 “Yea, I will appear unto my servants, and speak unto them with mine own voice, if my people will keep my commandments, and do not pollute this holy house. Yea the hearts of thousands and tens of thousands shall greatly rejoice in consequence of the blessings which shall be poured out, and the endowment with which my servants have been endowed in this house. And the fame of this house shall spread to foreign lands; and this is the beginning of the blessing which shall be poured out upon the heads of my people. Even so. Amen.”

“The covenants we make with the associated ordinances we receive in the temple become our credentials for admission into God’s presence. These covenants elevate us beyond the limits of our own power and perspective. We make covenants to show our devotion to build up the kingdom. We become covenant people as we are placed under covenant to God. All the promised blessings are ours through our faithfulness to these covenants. . . .

“What can the women of the Church do to claim the blessings of the temple?

“Through His prophets, the Lord invites those who have not yet received the blessings of the temple to do whatever may be necessary to qualify to receive them. He invites those who have already received these blessings to return as often as possible to enjoy again the experience, to increase their vision and understanding of His eternal plan.

“Let us be worthy to have a current temple recommend. Let us go to the temple to seal our families eternally. Let us return to the temple as often as our circumstances will permit. Let us give our kindred dead the opportunity to receive the ordinances of exaltation. Let us enjoy the spiritual strength and the revelation we receive as we attend the temple regularly. Let us be faithful and make and keep temple covenants to receive the full blessings of the Atonement.”1

Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency.

From Our History

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) taught that Relief Society grew out of sisters’ desire to worship in temples:

“During the construction of the Kirtland Temple the women were called upon to grind their china into small particles to be mixed with the plaster used on the walls of the temple, which would catch the light of the sun and the moon and reflect that light to beautify the appearance of the building.

“In those times, when there was very little of money but an abundance of faith, the workmen gave of their strength and resources to the construction of the Lord’s house. The women supplied them with food, the best they could prepare. Edward W. Tullidge reported that while the women were sewing the temple veils, Joseph Smith, observing them, said, ‘Well, sisters, you are always on hand. The sisters are always first and foremost in all good works. Mary was first at the resurrection; and the sisters now are the first to work on the inside of the temple.’ . . .

“Again in Nauvoo, when the temple was under construction, a few women joined together to make shirts for the workmen. It was out of these circumstances that twenty of them gathered on Thursday, 17 March 1842, in the upper room of the Prophet’s store.” 2

What Can I Do?

1. What support can I offer to help my sisters prepare for and attend the temple?
2. How can I exemplify the heritage of the early sisters who sacrificed to receive temple blessings?
3. How can I claim the blessings of the temple?

I love this month’s message about “Our Responsibility to Be Worthy of Temple Worship.” I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and we got to drive to the Atlanta Georgia Temple to be sealed as a family. I cherish that trip and can still remember that day as if it were yesterday but I was 5yrs old then. It’s one of the few things I can remember from before my tween years. I also remember being baptized, the first time I went to the Temple with the Young Women, 2 family vacations, one Priesthood blessing and a couple Family Home Evenings. Everything else must not be as important because I don’t remember much after those experiences. If I can only remember the happy and spiritually significant events from my childhood, then obviously they must be of great importance to my life and my existence here on Earth. I’m grateful that my parents chose to be worthy to enter and receive the blessings that come from/with attending the Temple, so that we could be sealed as a family forever.

My husband and I now live in Utah (near the Mt. Timpanogos Temple) and we love going to the Temple on a regular basis, it helps to remind us the covenants we’ve made to each other and to The Lord. It also helps to remind us of what we have to do daily to be worthy to have a Temple Recommend and to make sure we renew it before it expires. I’m sure most of you are like us and try to visit the local temple when you visit other places while on Vacation and that’s always the best part of our trip. Gotta keep your Temple Recommend handy! I’ve been able to go to the Laie Hawaii Temple, the Orlando Florida Temple and obviously the other ones here in Utah. I know that a lot of sisters still live days away from any Temple and aren’t able to go as often as you’d like to, but can still benefit from living worthily to hold a current Temple Recommend and know that you are blessed for it.

Floridians have since been blessed with the Orlando Florida Temple and I highly recommend a visit if you’re planning a trip to Disney World. It brought tears to my eyes and was so happy to heard the Ft. Lauderdale Florida Temple announced in October 2009 General Conference. I can’t wait to take a special Family trip to that one.

I thought it be cute to have a Car (made out of paper) with our sister’s Family in it. Then I also, a reflection of the Temple on the windshield to show that we are in the parking lot & to show that we should always strive to go to the Temple. This is because of my personal experience of having taken a “road trip” to the Atlanta Georgia Temple when I was 5 to be sealed to my family. I also know that most people don’t have the blessing of living near a Temple and probably visit Temples while on Vacation or plan special Temple trips with family or a church group. This Box Car also reminds those of us who do live near Temples, to go to the Temple more often. Even if your kids can’t actually enter the Temple it’s great to show them the importance of Temple Worship and how much you value it, by going their often.

Here’s the quotes which I “graffiti‘d” or included on the Family Car:

“Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord.” Isaiah 2:3
“Let us return to the temple as often as our circumstances will permit.”
“Let us go to the temple to seal our families eternally.”
How can I claim the blessings of the temple?

The Cool Nissan Murano Paper Car! My dear friend has one so it reminds me of her and decided it was perfect for what I needed. Got the original template is from a Japanese site called Niffty Art66 here. It’s sporty enough on the outside for those without children and spacious enough for those with children (unless you have 12 kids), and it’s not a Van (I like vans, just don’t think everyone does). But if you don’t like this SUV there are tons of other ones to choose from here or here, except that they are a little different because I re-did the car template to make it easier for us to make multiples and obviously has cool quotes. I also found other cool Paper Cars here, but they weren’t “cartoony” enough to match the cute family peoples. WARNING: Remember, the real Nissan Murano doesn’t have a seat in the back, but this is a cartoon, so it’s just for fun. And I don’t really think that you need to go out and get a new car, it’s just a fun thing to make.

Instructions:

Print in color on white paper or cardstock. ( I used plain paper for the sample but it looks a little flimsy so maybe cardstock or just between cardstock and regular paper would be better.)

Cut out car with sharp scissors on the outside of all of the black lines. Be careful not to cut off a tab/flap.

Mountain fold all flaps. Valley fold at the base of the front windshield.

Add glue to tabs as you go.

Start gluing each tab in place. Glue the base last.

Optional: Mix-n-match families! Cut out custom family graphics and glue them over the windows.

Pre-Made Visiting Teaching Gifts

If you’re like me and stay up way too late making things for the sisters you Visit Teach (like my Banana Bread incident), I feel for you and know that it can be taxing, but am sure you’re being blessed for it anyways. Do you need a break and want to still have something handmade for her? Let other sisters do the crafty gluing and cutting and order one of these gifts below and take a well deserved, well needed nap. Instead of acting on our Spiritual promptings we’ll be falling asleep to the Spirit’s whisperings and not react as quickly as needed. LOL I know I have fallen asleep at the wrong time.
