Study this material and, as appropriate, discuss it with the sisters you visit. Use the questions to help you strengthen your sisters and to make Relief Society an active part of your own life.

A Society of Holy Women
Eliza R. Snow, second Relief Society general president, taught: “Paul the Apostle anciently spoke of holy women. It is the duty of each one of us to be a holy woman. We shall have elevated aims, if we are holy women. We shall feel that we are called to perform important duties. No one is exempt from them. There is no sister so isolated, and her sphere so narrow but what she can do a great deal towards establishing the Kingdom of God upon the earth.”1

Sisters, we are not isolated nor is our sphere narrow. By accepting the gift of activity in Relief Society, we become part of what the Prophet Joseph described as a society “separate from all the evils of the world—choice, virtuous, and holy.”2

This society helps us strengthen our faith and grow spiritually by giving us leadership, service, and teaching opportunities. In our service a new dimension is added to our lives. We progress spiritually, and our sense of belonging, identity, and self-worth increases. We realize that the whole intent of the gospel plan is to provide an opportunity for us to reach our fullest potential.

Relief Society helps prepare us to receive the blessings of the temple, to honor the covenants we make, and to be engaged in the cause of Zion. Relief Society helps us increase our faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families, and seek out and help those in need.

The work of Relief Society is holy, and doing holy work creates holiness in us.
Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency.

From the Scriptures
Exodus 19:5; Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

Psalm 24:3–4; Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

1 Thessalonians 4:7; For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

Titus 2:3–4; The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

Doctrine and Covenants 38:24; And let every man esteem his brother as himself, and practice virtue and holiness before me.

D&C 46:33; And ye must practice virtue and holiness before me continually. Even so. Amen.

D&C 82:14; For Zion must increase in beauty, and in holiness; her borders must be enlarged; her stakes must be strengthened; yea, verily I say unto you, Zion must arise and put on her beautiful garments.

D&C 87:8; Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.

Moses 7:18 And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.

From Our History
Speaking to the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, the Prophet Joseph emphasized holiness, explaining that as sisters became pure and holy, they would have a marked influence upon the world. He explained: “Meekness, love, purity—these are the things that should magnify you. … This Society … shall have power to command queens in their midst. … The kings and queens of the earth will come unto Zion, and pay their respects.” Relief Society sisters living their covenants command the respect not only of noble people, but “if you live up to your privileges,” Joseph promised the sisters, “the angels cannot be restrained from being your associates.”3

As the sisters participated in the work of serving and saving others, they became personally sanctified. Lucy Mack Smith, the Prophet’s mother, shared the good Relief Society could accomplish: “We must cherish one another, watch over one another, comfort one another and gain instruction, that we may all sit down in heaven together.”4

From the Scriptures:

Isaiah 2:2–3; “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

D&C 109:22–23; “And we ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them; And from this place they may bear exceedingly great and glorious tidings, in truth, unto the ends of the earth, that they may know that this is thy work, and that thou hast put forth thy hand, to fulfill that which thou hast spoken by the mouths of the prophets, concerning the last days.”

D&C 110:8–10 “Yea, I will appear unto my servants, and speak unto them with mine own voice, if my people will keep my commandments, and do not pollute this holy house. Yea the hearts of thousands and tens of thousands shall greatly rejoice in consequence of the blessings which shall be poured out, and the endowment with which my servants have been endowed in this house. And the fame of this house shall spread to foreign lands; and this is the beginning of the blessing which shall be poured out upon the heads of my people. Even so. Amen.”

“The covenants we make with the associated ordinances we receive in the temple become our credentials for admission into God’s presence. These covenants elevate us beyond the limits of our own power and perspective. We make covenants to show our devotion to build up the kingdom. We become covenant people as we are placed under covenant to God. All the promised blessings are ours through our faithfulness to these covenants. . . .

“What can the women of the Church do to claim the blessings of the temple?

“Through His prophets, the Lord invites those who have not yet received the blessings of the temple to do whatever may be necessary to qualify to receive them. He invites those who have already received these blessings to return as often as possible to enjoy again the experience, to increase their vision and understanding of His eternal plan.

“Let us be worthy to have a current temple recommend. Let us go to the temple to seal our families eternally. Let us return to the temple as often as our circumstances will permit. Let us give our kindred dead the opportunity to receive the ordinances of exaltation. Let us enjoy the spiritual strength and the revelation we receive as we attend the temple regularly. Let us be faithful and make and keep temple covenants to receive the full blessings of the Atonement.”1

Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency.

From Our History

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) taught that Relief Society grew out of sisters’ desire to worship in temples:

“During the construction of the Kirtland Temple the women were called upon to grind their china into small particles to be mixed with the plaster used on the walls of the temple, which would catch the light of the sun and the moon and reflect that light to beautify the appearance of the building.

“In those times, when there was very little of money but an abundance of faith, the workmen gave of their strength and resources to the construction of the Lord’s house. The women supplied them with food, the best they could prepare. Edward W. Tullidge reported that while the women were sewing the temple veils, Joseph Smith, observing them, said, ‘Well, sisters, you are always on hand. The sisters are always first and foremost in all good works. Mary was first at the resurrection; and the sisters now are the first to work on the inside of the temple.’ . . .

“Again in Nauvoo, when the temple was under construction, a few women joined together to make shirts for the workmen. It was out of these circumstances that twenty of them gathered on Thursday, 17 March 1842, in the upper room of the Prophet’s store.” 2

What Can I Do?

1. What support can I offer to help my sisters prepare for and attend the temple?
2. How can I exemplify the heritage of the early sisters who sacrificed to receive temple blessings?
3. How can I claim the blessings of the temple?

I cherish that trip and can still remember that day as if it were yesterday but I was 5yrs old then. It’s one of the few things I can remember from before my tween years. I also remember being baptized, the first time I went to the Temple with the Young Women, 2 family vacations, one Priesthood blessing and a couple Family Home Evenings. Everything else must not be as important because I don’t remember much after those experiences. If I can only remember the happy and spiritually significant events from my childhood, then obviously they must be of great importance to my life and my existence here on Earth. I’m grateful that my parents chose to be worthy to enter and receive the blessings that come from/with attending the Temple, so that we could be sealed as a family forever.

My husband and I now live in Utah (near the Mt. Timpanogos Temple) and we love going to the Temple on a regular basis, it helps to remind us the covenants we’ve made to each other and to The Lord. It also helps to remind us of what we have to do daily to be worthy to have a Temple Recommend and to make sure we renew it before it expires. I’m sure most of you are like us and try to visit the local temple when you visit other places while on Vacation and that’s always the best part of our trip. Gotta keep your Temple Recommend handy! I’ve been able to go to the Laie Hawaii Temple, the Orlando Florida Temple and obviously the other ones here in Utah. I know that a lot of sisters still live days away from any Temple and aren’t able to go as often as you’d like to, but can still benefit from living worthily to hold a current Temple Recommend and know that you are blessed for it.

Floridians have since been blessed with the Orlando Florida Temple and I highly recommend a visit if you’re planning a trip to Disney World. It brought tears to my eyes and was so happy to heard the Ft. Lauderdale Florida Temple announced in October 2009 General Conference. I can’t wait to take a special Family trip to that one.

I thought it be cute to have a Car (made out of paper) with our sister’s Family in it. Then I also, a reflection of the Temple on the windshield to show that we are in the parking lot & to show that we should always strive to go to the Temple. This is because of my personal experience of having taken a “road trip” to the Atlanta Georgia Temple when I was 5 to be sealed to my family. I also know that most people don’t have the blessing of living near a Temple and probably visit Temples while on Vacation or plan special Temple trips with family or a church group. This Box Car also reminds those of us who do live near Temples, to go to the Temple more often. Even if your kids can’t actually enter the Temple it’s great to show them the importance of Temple Worship and how much you value it, by going their often.

Here’s the quotes which I “graffiti‘d” or included on the Family Car:

“Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord.” Isaiah 2:3
“Let us return to the temple as often as our circumstances will permit.”
“Let us go to the temple to seal our families eternally.”
How can I claim the blessings of the temple?

The Cool Nissan Murano Paper Car! My dear friend has one so it reminds me of her and decided it was perfect for what I needed. Got the original template is from a Japanese site called Niffty Art66 here. It’s sporty enough on the outside for those without children and spacious enough for those with children (unless you have 12 kids), and it’s not a Van (I like vans, just don’t think everyone does). But if you don’t like this SUV there are tons of other ones to choose from here or here, except that they are a little different because I re-did the car template to make it easier for us to make multiples and obviously has cool quotes. I also found other cool Paper Cars here, but they weren’t “cartoony” enough to match the cute family peoples. WARNING: Remember, the real Nissan Murano doesn’t have a seat in the back, but this is a cartoon, so it’s just for fun. And I don’t really think that you need to go out and get a new car, it’s just a fun thing to make.

Mix & Match for your sister’s Family! I used LetteringDelights.com’s Mom, Dad, Kids, Baby Boy, Baby Girl & Class Graphics for the members of the family in the car. You can cut out each window as needed. You can show her and her hubby in the car without any kids if she doesn’t have any, you can choose an older couple if they are empty nesters, you can choose to include the whole family, just her alone, or if your sister is single, you can use the Bride & Groom to help remind her that it’s her goal.

Download this month’s Family Temple Trip Car for Visiting Teachers & even Home Teachers by clicking either the link or image below.

Instructions:

Print in color on white paper or cardstock. ( I used plain paper for the sample but it looks a little flimsy so maybe cardstock or just between cardstock and regular paper would be better.)

Cut out car with sharp scissors on the outside of all of the black lines. Be careful not to cut off a tab/flap.

Mountain fold all flaps. Valley fold at the base of the front windshield.

Add glue to tabs as you go.

Start gluing each tab in place. Glue the base last.

Optional: Mix-n-match families! Cut out custom family graphics and glue them over the windows.

Pre-Made Visiting Teaching Gifts

If you’re like me and stay up way too late making things for the sisters you Visit Teach (like my Banana Bread incident), I feel for you and know that it can be taxing, but am sure you’re being blessed for it anyways. Do you need a break and want to still have something handmade for her? Let other sisters do the crafty gluing and cutting and order one of these gifts below and take a well deserved, well needed nap. Instead of acting on our Spiritual promptings we’ll be falling asleep to the Spirit’s whisperings and not react as quickly as needed. LOL I know I have fallen asleep at the wrong time.

If you can translate the instructions please comment on this post with the translated instructions and I will add them to the site. Otherwise, you can always just use the instructions in English.

Instructions:
1. Print covers (Front and Back pages separately) in color on regular 8.5”x11” paper with 0.25” border on all sides.

2. Cut on solid lines.

3. Fold on dotted lines. Add tape/glue to the corners of flap # 1 and adhere the flaps in order.

4. Apply double sided tape/glue over the spine where indicated.

5. Slip back cover over the existing back cover of the manual. Slip front cover over the existing front cover of the manual. Should slide right in.
6. Flip book over. Fold the front cover’s spine over the back cover’s spine making sure to press firmly so the spine is secure.

Optional: Add clear packing tape to the whole Cover. Fold tape over the flaps but do not tape it to the book or it won’t be able to slip off. Cut any excess tape. This helps to keep the ink from smearing and makes it more durable.

Remember the whole cover is removable! (or it should be, because I didn’t say anything about gluing or taping anything to the actual book.) So make one for yourself, the sisters you Visit Teach, a family member, a neighbor or a friend.

Show off your very own custom Digitally Scrapped Joseph Smith Manual Book Cover in Relief Society!

Additional Details about the Book Cover:

I don’t know if this cover can fit any other Teachings of Presidents of the Church books, I made this to fit this specific book (Joseph Smith because that’s the one we’re on), but you can try and if you find another book it can fit just comment and let me know which ones so I can add it to the post.

I don’t know if it will fit the same manual in other languages [Can fit Portuguese and Spanish however you just need to adjust the spine depth for the added pages in the book - edited Aug 29]. The English one is 6 inches wide x 9 inches tall and approx 0.825 inches thick (spine). Comment and let me know if it does so I can try to translate it for you.

If you print it on thicker paper, it may be difficult to fold at the dotted lines, so you’ll want to adjust it as necessary.

Bonus: Your Hubby will never accidentally grab your book again. Unless he wants to be made fun of in Priesthood. LOL

The dates which are circled on the back calendar are Sept 26, General Relief Society Meeting, Oct 3 & 4 General Conference.

Let me know if you use this cover, I’d love to hear what you ladies think about it. Did you like it? Would you want to get more covers? Do you think you can design one for us?

BTW I used a couple of the FREE! fonts found on KevinAndAmanda.com. Too cute!

Huge thanks to Gladys Araneda, from Santiago, Chile. Muchisimas gracias Gladys! I am posting some pre-made tags which she made, they can be attached to some No. 2 pencils. Take advantage of those Back-to-School specials and get a pack of pencils for the sisters you Visit Teach.

Today’s Treat can be made from some scraps of ribbon and some plastic craft canvas (the kind with a ton of squares usually for yarn projects). They are Ribbon Bookmarks! I made these myself and have them in my scriptures (quad) and are very handy and totally add color to your scriptures. Most importantly, they help me to know where I am for various studying needs, like Sunday School, Personal & Family Scripture Study and then just a couple others for scriptures I like to look back on. There are several ways to mark scriptures, like the ideas found here, here, here and here, but I felt like those could be a bit overwhelming and I wasn’t quite sure how to make an easy handout for those. So, the following are instructions on making your own Ribbon Bookmarks and, best of all, for making one for the sisters you visit teach to help them with their scripture study, because after all this month’s message is to, Seek Education and Lifelong Learning. BTW this is also a great mini activity idea.

Materials & Supplies Needed

Mini or Standard Quad (you can make one for the triple combo, but you’ll need to adjust the width of the canvas to fit the spine.) Be sure to peek at or ask the sister you Visit Teach to see what size scriptures they have.

3 spools of different colored ribbon

Plastic Canvas

Scissors

Ruler

Instructions: (see printable instructions w/ pics below)
Step 1:	Cut Plastic Canvas to Size:
Plastic Canvas Height = 4” (compact print quad)
Plastic Canvas Height = 5” (regular print quad)
Plastic Canvas Width = 1 ¾”
Note: When you slide the Canvas into the spine it should be snug. Adjust Canvas width accordingly. The height of the Canvas should be a little more than half way down the spine to make sure it doesn’t come out while using the bookmarks.

Step 2:	Cut Ribbon: (diagonal cut at the ends)
Cut 3-5* strands of ribbon = 19” each (compact print quad)
Cut 3-5* strands of ribbon = 22” each (regular print quad)
*It depends on how many holes you have in the Canvas’s width and how many ribbons you’d like.
Note: I prefer different colored /patterned/ textured ribbons to help discern which scripture I’m marking with each color. But for a less expensive alternative you could simply use the same ribbon for each one.

Step 3:	Thread Ribbon:
Thread 1 ribbon for every 2 holes so that one strand of ribbon makes two bookmarks. You can choose to skip a hole in the middle to spread the ribbon apart. See diagram. Ribbon should always remain even with all the rest. Example if you cut 3 strands of ribbon you’ll have 6 total bookmarks.

Step 4:	Insert Canvas w/ Ribbon into Spine:
Once the ribbon has been threaded simply slide the Canvas with the ribbons at the top between the leather and the binding, the spine (if they are glued together this may not work). Push Canvas down to make sure the top of the Canvas is flush with the binding.
Note: Cut ends of ribbon after you’ve threaded for a clean, neat look.

Pre-Made Visiting Teaching Kit for August 2009:

Each sister is different. Visit Hand Picked Daisy to purchase August’s Visiting Teaching Kit. This month she’s included the message, a yummy recipe, and a scripture study chart. She’s backed the chart with heavy chipboard to make it more sturdy so our sisters can use it everyday. She works hard every month to come up with some super cute ideas which go along with each month’s theme and her kits are only $4 each. She even has them early for those sisters who are on top of things and can go the first of the month.

Why Should I Continually Seek Spiritual and Secular Education?

D&C 93:36–37: “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth. Light and truth forsake that evil one.”

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: “The Lord has told us that our time should ‘be devoted to the studying of the scriptures’ (D&C 26:1) and that ‘the Book of Mormon and the holy scriptures are given … for [our] instruction’ (D&C 33:16). Every woman can be a gospel doctrine instructor in her home, and every sister in the Church needs gospel knowledge as a leader and teacher. If you have not already developed the habit of daily scripture study, start now and keep studying in order to be prepared for your responsibilities in this life and in the eternities” (“My Soul Delighteth in the Scriptures,” Liahona and Ensign, May 2004, 107–8).

President Thomas S. Monson: “Beyond our study of spiritual matters, secular learning is also essential. … I urge you to pursue your education—if you are not already doing so or have not done so—that you might be prepared to provide if circumstances necessitate such.

“Your talents will expand as you study and learn. You will be able to better assist your families in their learning, and you will have peace of mind in knowing that you have prepared yourself for the eventualities that you may encounter in life” (“Three Goals to Guide You,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2007, 119).

How Can I Be a Lifelong Learner?

President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency: “We will have to make some hard choices of how we use our time. … But remember, you are interested in education, not just for mortal life but for eternal life. When you see that reality clearly with spiritual sight, you will put spiritual learning first and yet not slight the secular learning. …

“… And since what we will need to know is hard to discern, we need the help of heaven to know which of the myriad things we could study we would most wisely learn. It also means that we cannot waste time entertaining ourselves when we have the chance to read or to listen to whatever will help us learn what is true and useful. Insatiable curiosity will be our hallmark” (“Education for Real Life,” Ensign, Oct. 2002, 18, 19).

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “A few of the basic attributes needed to become a lifelong learner are courage, faithful desire, humility, patience, curiosity, and a willingness to communicate and share the knowledge that we gain. …

“My dear sisters, don’t ever sell yourself short as a woman or as a mother. … Do not let the world define, denigrate, or limit your feelings of lifelong learning and the values of motherhood in the home—both here mortally and in the eternal learning and benefits you give to your children and to your companion.

“Lifelong learning is essential to the vitality of the human mind, body, and soul. It enhances self-worth and self-actuation. Lifelong learning is invigorating mentally and is a great defense against aging, depression, and self-doubt” (“The Journey of Lifelong Learning,” in Brigham Young University 2008–2009 Speeches [2009], 2, 8–9).
